How to Measure
Recess vs. Face Fix – Which Installation is Right for You?
Before measuring your windows, decide whether you want your blinds to be installed inside the window recess or on the face of the wall or frame.
Recess Fit (Inside Mount): Recess installation offers a clean, streamlined look as the blind sits neatly within the window frame. However, it requires precise measuring and enough recess depth to accommodate the head rail and operating mechanism.
Face Fix (Outside Mount): This option is easier to install and more forgiving when it comes to measurements. It’s ideal if you want to cover window frames, hide imperfections, or block out more light around the edges.
Choosing the right fit not only affects the look of your blinds but also their functionality—be sure to follow our step-by-step guides for accurate measurements.
How to Measure for Roller Blinds
Measuring your windows correctly is essential for a perfect fit when ordering custom roller blinds. At The Blinds Company, we make it easy. Whether you're fitting inside the recess or mounting on the outside, follow these guidelines to ensure your blinds look and perform their best.
Fitting Roller Blinds Inside the Recess (Recess Fit)
A recess fit gives a clean, streamlined finish, ideal for modern interiors.
Steps to measure:
- Measure the width of the window recess in three places (top, middle, and bottom).
- Measure the drop (height) in three places as well (left, centre, right).
- Use the smallest measurement for both width and drop.
- We recommend deducting 10mm from the width to allow smooth operation and prevent the fabric from rubbing against the sides.
Do not make any deductions for the drop.
Fitting Roller Blinds Outside the Recess (Face Fix)
A face fix installation adds height and width to your windows, great for blocking more light and creating a bold visual frame.
Steps to measure:
- Measure the exact width and drop of the area you want the blind to cover.
- Add at least 100mm to both width and drop to ensure full coverage.
- Order your blind as the finished blind size—no deductions will be made on our end.
- Be sure to specify 'face fix' installation when placing your order.
How to Measure for Venetian and Plaswood Blinds
Accurate measurements are essential for a smooth fit and professional look when ordering custom Venetian blinds. Follow our simple guide below to ensure your new blinds are measured perfectly—whether you're mounting them inside the recess or outside on the wall.
Measuring for Recess Fit Venetian Blinds
Recess fitting gives a clean, flush appearance that blends beautifully with your window frame.
Steps to measure:
- Ensure the depth of your window is at least 40 mm for 25mm blinds and 60mm for 50mm blinds
- Measure the width of the window recess in three places: top, centre, and bottom.
- Use the smallest width measurement and deduct 10mm to allow clearance for the blind track.
- Measure the drop (height) in three places: left, middle, and right.
- Use the smallest drop and deduct 10mm to ensure smooth movement and avoid contact with the sill or frame.
Measuring for Face Fix Venetian Blinds (Outside Mount)
Face fixing allows you to cover a larger area than the window itself, providing enhanced light control and a bold design statement.
Steps to measure:
- Measure the width of the window and add 100mm total (100mm on each side) to ensure full coverage.
- Measure the drop of the window and add 200mm to avoid drilling into the lintel and to clear the window sill.
- Be mindful of protruding sills, as they may interfere with the movement of the blind.
How to Measure for Vertical Blinds
Getting the right fit for your custom vertical blinds starts with accurate measurements. Whether you're installing inside the recess or on the face of the wall, follow these steps to ensure the perfect fit for your windows. Vertical blinds are ideal for large windows, sliding doors, and areas that need excellent light control and privacy.
Recess or Face Fix?
First, decide how you'd like your vertical blinds to be mounted:
Recess fit: Blinds are installed inside the window frame for a clean, built-in look.
Face fix: Blinds are mounted on the wall above the window to cover the entire opening.
Check before choosing recess fit:
- Ensure the depth of your window is at least 90mm for 127mm slats.
- Look for any obstructions inside the window recess such as burglar bars, handles, or protruding sills that might interfere with blind movement.
- If space is limited or obstructions exist, opt for a face fix installation.
Measuring for Recess Fit Vertical Blinds
Steps to measure:
- Measure the width at the top of the window (where the track will be mounted).
- Deduct 10mm from the total width for smooth operation.
- Measure the drop in three positions: left, centre, and right.
- Use the shortest drop and deduct 10mm to ensure clearance.
Measuring for Face Fix Vertical Blinds (Outside Mount)
Steps to measure:
- Measure the width of the window and add 300mm total (150mm on each side) for full coverage.
- Measure the drop and add 200mm to avoid drilling into the lintel, and to clear the sill.
- If the blind is going to the floor, deduct 20mm for carpet flooring or 10mm for tiled floors to avoid dragging.
